A significant new study by @UniMelb researchers Assoc Prof Bishakhdatta Gayen and Dr Taimoor Sohail has found that slowing of the world's strongest ocean current could dramatically change Australia's Southern Ocean and global climate, affecting sea levels, ocean warming, and marine ecosystems. unimelb.edu.au/newsroom/news…
“This research shows how vulnerable even our largest ocean circulation patterns are to climate change," says Academy Fellow @ProfMattEngland FAA (@unswscience). "This follows up from our 2023 study, where we showed that the Antarctic overturning circulation will dramatically slow down as Antarctic meltwater increases over the coming decades. A slowdown of these two major ocean circulation systems would have major ramifications for global climate and marine ecosystems for centuries to come.”
