🚨 New deals on food and drink, emissions trading and youth mobility are expected at the UK-EU Leaders' Summit on Friday 20 November. But what does this mean for British business? @William_Bain spoke to @JustinOnWeb on @BBCr4today to set out the benefits we all could see. 👇

Polling on Free Movement of Persons with the EU 🇪🇺 shows UK 🇬🇧 public is broadly supportive, but framing matters 👇 @RestoreFOM
🧵Polling suggests free movement might be far less of a barrier to public in rejoining the EU than it was a reason for leaving. But how sensitive is that to framing and what free movement actually means to people? At top level - 44% support FoM, 24% oppose. But..

Significant development on the EU-UK Agri Food Deal. Looking forward to reading the draft text when it is made public
NEW Draft deal on UK-EU food and agrifood exports (veterinary agreement / SPS) done and circulated to EU27 member states ahead of Council (coreper) meeting in Brussels tomorrow. 200 page legal texts on this, and emissions trading, although square brackets remain on numbers for youth experience scheme. Transition to dynamic alignment agreed in some areas where food standards have diverged. 15 page draft Joint Statement for Nov 20th summit also circulated referencing defence, security cooperation and reassurance over Made in Europe agenda. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmp3…

Clearest evidence yet of Reform’s pivot to a more populist interventionist economic platform and willing to be excesses of capitalism critical. IMO that always made sense given where their likely voter pool is (socially right, economically statist) than trying to out free market the Tories on the economic right
12,000 jobs at Poundland are on the line. Wall Street shouldn’t be allowed to destroy a major British business to satisfy their investors. Burnham needs to act.

Struggle to see why a policy position on the ECHR should disqualify someone from standing as Mayor of London & as we have seen from our current & a previous Prime Minister, electorally successful Mayors usually have some independence from the Party line bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq78…

The ECHR protects your right to the peaceful enjoyment of your property. That matters when a Government elected on just 34% of the vote has MPs talking about ‘seizing’ people’s homes. Fundamental rights should not depend simply on who has a Commons majority. – at East Ham, London
I said it in 2020 and I’ll say it again. If you leave a home empty long-term in the middle of a housing crisis, it should be seized. Today’s announcement is great news.

Replying to @JAHeale
@JAHeale here is a summary: she announced £100 billion of uncosted energy ‘support’. The markets and the party realised she was a nut job and financially illiterate. And she was, mercifully, ejected. She is now an international embarrassment with zero self awareness.
New: former PM Liz Truss will publish her second book next Monday “Bank Job” “Timed to coincide with the Burnham Government’s first Budget, it lifts the lid on what really happened around the Mini-Budget in 2022, challenging the establishment narrative and examining in particular the role of the unaccountable Bank of England”

Wow, more Republicans than Democrats now want state ownership of businesses. I guess national conservatives put the "nation" in "nationalization".
Two years ago, what share of GOP voters would agree with government ownership of companies? Now 29% of GOP voters do. More than Democrats. This must be reversed. Those who pushed for this may come to regret it if America becomes a socialist country.

Badenoch also hits an all time approval rating high, up 3 to +5. Burnham is down 5 to +11, Davey is down one to -11, Lowe remains steady at -15, (though less than half give a firm view on Davey/Lowe) Farage is down 2 to -26 and Polanski is down a lot 7 to -35- his lowest for us.

Shooting unarmed civilians is murder. I find it astonishing that a man of this military seniority argues for murdering civilians.
Major-General Julian Thompson, who commanded 3 Commando Brigade during the Falklands War, on the small boats crisis: "We could stop them tomorrow if we really had the guts. I'd shot them, sorry but I would." "We're wet. I think there's going to be a revolution." Another way to think about Trump announcement today: If he increased US diesel imports from Canada by 4%, he would gain as much fuel as from this Russia deal. But the Canadians are global super-villains, so who wants to buy from them when you could enrich Putin instead?

That "win back the centre" drive didn't last long, did it?
NEW: The Tory deputy leader has promised to reverse any step Labour takes to move Britain closer to the EU if his party regains power. Alex Burghart says the “reset” in UK–EU relations begun under Starmer and continued by Burnham has been “disastrous” and “extraordinary”. It means the Tories will rip up - Agrifoods agreement - Youth free movement deal - UK’s return to Erasmus - EU’s 12-year UK fishing access - Moves to link carbon trading schemes (All expected to be finalised and confirmed at the summit later this year) Burnham’s reopening of the Brexit debate has raised the question of where the Tories will position themselves Some (eg @George_Osborne) have warned the Tories not to promise to overturn Labour moves as it’ll see the party painted as anti-business at the next election. But the Tory position is now clear: The EU-UK relationship will revert to 2024 position if they win back power. Full interview below. ‘Tory deputy vows to reverse any step closer to EU’ thetimes.com/article/a5a12cf…

ICYMI - 2 days ago we heard that "the first stage" of the Conservatives strategy was to win back voters from the LibDems and Labour. Unless that stage is now complete 🤔, the party may wish to be a bit more open-minded rather than blindly opposed to any closer ties with the EU – at Wrotham, South East

Electricity generation per person in the United Kingdom has fallen by a third from its early-2000s peak. Globally, electricity generation per person has grown by more than 50% this century. In the United Kingdom, things have moved in the opposite direction. Its generation per person peaked in 2003 and has fallen by more than a third since then. You can see this in the chart, which shows generation per person since 1920. Today, levels are back to where they were in the late 1960s. Some of that decline is a change in electricity imports, rather than demand: net imports have increased from 1% of electricity demand in 2010 to 9% in 2025. But it’s still true that the UK consumes much less electricity than it used to. The most common explanation is deindustrialization: as the economy shifted from manufacturing to services, electricity demand fell. That’s part of the explanation, but far from all of it. Sectoral data from the International Energy Agency confirms that electricity consumption in industry has fallen by one-quarter since 2005 (more if we calculate this per person). But residential and commercial electricity use has fallen by just as much. Deindustrialization has reduced demand, but improvements in energy efficiency — such as the shift from incandescent to LED lightbulbs and the introduction of efficiency standards for appliances — have played an important role too.
