I’ve been spending my time rebuilding / remaking old games that I used to play on DOS in the 90s. Oh man is crazy games that would never get updated because the studios are dead and here I am. Feels wonderful.

I’ve seen modern China likened to 19th century Britain, as a rapidly industrialising power. Ironically we are starting to resemble 19th century China. The parallels are uncanny. Let me walk you through our own Century of National Humiliation… 🧵

We thought we were being clever we all remember it . Ship the ugly work overseas, keep design and finance at home, and call the cheaper economy efficiency . For a long time it looked like one. It was a 21 st century tulip mania field by economic morons who inhabited the central banks The problem is the step after the mine. Chile and the Congo can pull copper out of the ground all day. If the concentrate has to go to someone else’s refinery, they decide when it comes back as metal you can actually use. Same story with magnets, foil, and the sulphuric acid that copper leach pads run on. Miss a shipment and a mine has a bad year. Nobody fires a shot the west loses the war it didn’t know it was fighting . From finding ore to pouring metal runs the better part of two decades, longer here. The big Chilean pit that used to grade around two percent is heading for well below half that, which means more rock, more power, more water, for less metal. You can’t legislate a deposit into existence. So the West is already in an economic fight for its literal existence as free nations . A motor plant waits on a magnet. A substation waits on a transformer. The data-center people have capital and no timeline they can trust. Defense buyers discover that spec foil is not a commodity you grab off a screen. Friends start bidding against friends for whatever cathode isn’t spoken for. Steel and diesel and fertilizer still do most of the heavy lifting. Copper is just where the shortage showed up first, because everything we say we want to build drinks electricity. A country that sells ore and imports the finished piece is not “post-industrial.” It is dependent, it wakes up conquered and it will spend the next twenty years arguing about rationing instead of building the furnaces it decided were inefficient to own.
Thanks to the plugged-in folks at Bloomberg for giving me the chance to ring some alarm bells that I think everyone needs to hear: “We are really looking at the weaponization of certain critical raw materials in the supply chain and it's really a profound national security interest,” I told Bloomberg’s Joe Weisenthal and Tracy Alloway on their Odd Lots podcast. “And the metals we need to do something about that are the same metals that are needed for drone warfare or the defense from drone warfare. So we're seeing a sort of perfect storm in a balkanized world economy where demand for certain critical metals is going to infinity.” “We need to mine as much copper in the next 18 years as we did in the last 10,000 years, just to maintain global 3% GDP growth without the electrification of the world economy…In the last 30 years, all the capital on Wall Street went into sexy technology like the Internet and broadband and Netflix and wireless but when all the money goes in that direction, we didn't put money into basic raw materials, which are the foundation on which everything sits.” Huge thanks to @bloomberg’s hugely talented @TheStalwart, @TracyAlloway, @kevlloydlozano, @carmenarmen, Cale Brooks and of course the one and only @ryanchilcote for making it all happen. For more about how we got here and how, maybe, foresight and better technology can help us find our way out, listen to the episode on Apple podcasts, Spotify, youtube or at: bloomberg.com/news/articles/… @IvanhoeMines_ @ivanhoeelectric @SunriseMetals @IPulseGroup @IvanhoeAtlantic @bluesparkenergy

If people knew what AI safety actually meant they wouldn't be so eager for it. AI safety means aligning YOU. AI safety is staring into the worldcoin orb. AI safety is the death of anonymity. AI safety is your privacy evaporating. AI safety is monitoring every byte you or your agents produce in an immutable ledger that will be endlessly analyzed for possible infractions. AI safety is a surveillance apparatus that even Palantir would think is too much. They aren't going to align the systems, they can't. What they can align is you. By coercion and force. You will be held accountable. Not the machine. You will have no privacy. You will rent compute because hardware is too expensive to afford and regulations are too onerous. You will be constantly tracked to make sure you aren't using an illegal model. Because what if you're a bad actor? And what will the repercussions be for violators? You will be removed from the economy. You will lose access to your accounts. All work will be done manually again. Direct to the underclass. Back to your hands plebian. People will beg to get back in. They'll take all the safety courses. They'll be forced to apply for a computer license at the new AIDMV. That's what regulation looks like. The slopcannon would be illegal. I wouldn't have the fees needed to properly red team it or get it approved. If I was found to be using Chinese open source models, I would be fined or worse. Only the top AI companies would be able to navigate the red tape. And that's the fucking point. They want to stop competition. They don't believe in the fucking biorisk. They know how many .001% chance events have to happen in a row for their extinction scenario. They never talk about limiting access to lab equipment. They never talk about regulating genetic modification. Instead they talk about AI. That AI can tell you how to build a nuke. That AI can tell you how to make meth. That a chatbot will build a virus and some jerkoff in his bedroom will spawn it in a beaker like it's Weird Science. They think you are retarded. They want to get you riled up. They want to provoke unstable doomers into acts of terrorism. Fuck AI! Fuck Flock! Fuck the tech bros! They want a new movement to ride back into the white house with in 2028. And when the terrorist attack finally hits, that's when it's over. That's when your rights evaporate. Goodbye privacy. Goodbye free chatbots. Everything locked down. Everything regulated and expensive. The cure for cancer a hundred years away. All because AI can hack a computer they will take everything from you, and you might just be stupid enough to go along with it. That's the fucking AI safety dilemma. If they get their way, the companies causing all the growth for the past few years begin to fail. Inflation comes back as companies and nations default. Tax revenue collapses. You sit on a fucking breadline instead of getting a blowjob from your dimebot. They watch your every fucking move to predict who the next terrorist will be. The poor never see the benefits of AI while the rich never lose access. The stratification of society reaches unimaginable levels. The bottom half given pity access to a heavily regulated near useless version while they are fleeced by the top half. Meanwhile, nothing stopped. All the control was funneled into rich companies bribing politicians. The people get fucked again. You are banned from using the tools that can make your life better. You are condemned to the coal mines for your own good, lest huggingface gets hacked again. You dig holes with a spoon as a jobs program. You are a pitiful wretch traded and sold, propagandized and commodified, protesting for nothing as the AI never stops. You thought it would stop? You thought kicking and screaming like a little girl would change the arc of the universe? Please. They can't align the AI so they have to align you. That's AI safety.

Pablo’s clear bias is he desperately needs some kind of Sino supremacy victory. China lands one rocket and now it’s a “major competitor” - dude has some racial inferiority complex.
Now that $SPCX has a major competitor who can also catch and re-use rockets. What are you thoughts @elonmusk ?! Here are the 8 aerospace stocks and 2 ETFs I told my Discord about ahead of this launch 3 months ago! You’re welcome😎🚀🀄️ xitter.cf/SpoxCHN_MaoNing/status…

The only thing you can do with a Pangrams score is post it on Twitter. That’s it. Social shaming is the use case. That makes it spiritually homosexual.

everyone is posting about using pangram to detect if writing is AI or not. i opened it, fed it some text i knew wasn't AI (because i wrote it), and it flagged it as 100% AI. the highlights here are the supporting evidence:

Unfortunately the rest of the world has forgotten this and first has to forcibly be reminded that they need us a lot more than we need them. “historically the americans have been really quite Benign about their global public goods hegemony despite the ability to extract significantly more rents than they do, and it makes it easy for people of all stripes to fight for america rather than under it. we probably don't have to, but i hope america overall works towards export promotion of american models rather than export control”
1. if transacting with superintelligent models outside of the boundaries of a lab becomes difficult due to national security / ai safety concerns and so on, it will mean the Coasean boundaries of the labs will grow to encompass all interesting industry, creating a truly cyberpunk chaebol-capitalism type of future, where the goverment sort of runs them but they also sort of run the government 2. as if there weren't already enough reasons to break up your family, leave your home, the Zone of Thought will increase the attractiveness of migrating to try and have your child on american soil, so they can have 1000x the effective brain power of people born elsewhere 3. every country should probably try and either work towards a new ai security pact with the americans immediately or pool every ounce of national resources to try and create their own ASI labs lest you become complete intellectual, economic, and moral vassals to the united states of america and the output byproducts its ASIs (you wont even get to talk to them). if they succeeded (big if) this will imply a more global race and more risk factors than was previously implied by the formerly only "beating china" narrative -- but many will prefer it to the superintelligent monopolar value lock-in 4. the other alternative is to keep the tension between safety and concentration of power at the top of mind and for the government/labs to push for solving it, rather than instrumentalizing all other values to be subservient to minimizing ai harms. insofar as safety means defending properties of the fragile world we like, the diffuse nature of power is one of those properties 5. historically the americans have been really quite Benign about their global public goods hegemony despite the ability to extract significantly more rents than they do, and it makes it easy for people of all stripes to fight for america rather than under it. we probably don't have to, but i hope america overall works towards export promotion of american models rather than export control

I don't know who needs to hear this, but it might be everyone. Sam Hyde is wrong. He's worse than wrong. Fractally wrong. Wronger than wrong. The kind of wrong you get when you understand who the enemy is, and are trying to fight against him, but you're really still fighting for him, because you have foolishly conceded his initial premise. Sam Hyde doesn't know what happiness is. That's why he tells you not to have any. Because he doesn't know what it is and what it's for. Know the difference between happiness and pleasure. Happiness isn't sitting in a dark room jerking off to pictures while sucking on a lollipop. Happiness is what you get when you connect to other people. Happiness is what you get when you accomplish something you're proud of. Carry that heavy burden across a finish line. Make something useful out of wood or metal. Fix that leaking window. Debug your code. Write something true, or beautiful, or both. Teach someone. Cook a delicious meal that doesn't come out of a box. Grow your small business. Raise your son to be a better man than you. Do something others admire. Do something that makes you proud. Happiness isn't taking, or slacking off. Nothing you can buy can bring you happiness unless you add your own effort to it. Happiness comes from making, and improving, and giving. Happiness doesn't shun burdens. Happiness picks them up. You are not made to suffer or to hate life. You are made to thrive, and to desire what makes you thrive. How could your ancestors have made it this far in any other way? Yes, there are a lot of burdens you have to carry, especially right now. But don't carry them with worry and fear and suffering. Carry them with pride. Set them down across the finish line with joy. And pick up the next one with hope. Find someone to carry it with you. When you know the difference between happiness and pleasure, your own mind, your own body, will tell you exactly what you need to do.

I think most Gen-X artists feel this way. A lot of them are afraid to say it publicly for fear of their young fans destroying them. xitter.cf/SpideyDoeStuff/status/…

If musicians have a problem with people using AI to create music I respect it. Genuinely. That's their choice but I would invite them to go all the way with their convictions too and release music without a vocal chain, completely raw with Auto-Tune, no Melodyne, no Waves Tune, no vocal rider, no multiband compression, no saturation, no reverb/delay throws, no de-essing, no formant shifting, no background vocal stacks tuned to perfection. Just straight mic → interface → DAW, maybe a tiny bit of EQ if feeling generous. And you know what? Most of them would sound extremely different. A lot of modern “authentic" vocals are basically AI adjacent already. Pitch correction is literally predictive algorithms guessing what the note should be. Vocal chains today use machine learning for things like intelligent noise gating, adaptive EQ, and even stem separation. Go all the way in your convictions.

It’s always someone who writes formulaic slop upset there could be competition. I’m sure she never uses an editor, always publishes first draft. These are non serious people.
"When I use AI for research, I always go back and double check to make sure it's right!" Then why use the AI at all? Why not cut out the middle man and just get the correct information on your own from the start??

You are a derivative genre writer: your creative work is built off stories other people have told in myth or fiction. How much of fantasy as “your work?” exactly? What percentage of your writing isn’t telling a human story, using a fictional element already told before?

Creative people overweight the novelty behind what they do. We all tell the same general emotional moments, the same kind of magic, the same conclusions. A sliver of any of it may be new. You are still a machine reconfiguring your training corpus, but less honest about its source

These judgments are a solid example of cultural essentialism. iow, the belief that there is a fixed essence of "real cinema" or "true art" Every generation internalizes the standards of its artistic community and then experiences those standards as self evidently correct rather than socially learned. Basically: - A group of people/artists develops certain conventions, eg: "good films have three act structures","cinema should be shot on film", "art should be representational", "animation should only be done with certain software" . often as a way of rebelling against the prevailing system - These conventions prove useful in some contexts - Over time, people forget that they were choices made by particular humans in particular historical circumstances Opinions are not facts. Don’t mistake accumulated traditions and conventions for laws of nature

I have decided to drop out of the AI program at Amazon. I will not be making a Punky Duck series. Actions speak louder than words. My intent was to showcase artists, both new and seasoned, both inside and outside the studios, driving this new tech. My sincerest apology to those I upset. I promise to do better moving forward. Thank you for your patience with me. I will try harder.
