Iâve seen modern China likened to 19th century Britain, as a rapidly industrialising power. Ironically we are starting to resemble 19th century China. The parallels are uncanny.
Let me walk you through our own Century of National HumiliationâŠ

We thought we were being clever we all remember it .
Ship the ugly work overseas, keep design and finance at home, and call the cheaper economy efficiency . For a long time it looked like one.
It was a 21 st century tulip mania field by economic morons who inhabited the central banks
The problem is the step after the mine. Chile and the Congo can pull copper out of the ground all day.
If the concentrate has to go to someone elseâs refinery, they decide when it comes back as metal you can actually use.
Same story with magnets, foil, and the sulphuric acid that copper leach pads run on.
Miss a shipment and a mine has a bad year. Nobody fires a shot the west loses the war it didnât know it was fighting .
From finding ore to pouring metal runs the better part of two decades, longer here.
The big Chilean pit that used to grade around two percent is heading for well below half that, which means more rock, more power, more water, for less metal.
You canât legislate a deposit into existence.
So the West is already in an economic fight for its literal existence as free nations . A motor plant waits on a magnet. A substation waits on a transformer. The data-center people have capital and no timeline they can trust. Defense buyers discover that spec foil is not a commodity you grab off a screen.
Friends start bidding against friends for whatever cathode isnât spoken for.
Steel and diesel and fertilizer still do most of the heavy lifting. Copper is just where the shortage showed up first, because everything we say we want to build drinks electricity.
A country that sells ore and imports the finished piece is not âpost-industrial.â It is dependent, it wakes up conquered and it will spend the next twenty years arguing about rationing instead of building the furnaces it decided were inefficient to own.
Thanks to the plugged-in folks at Bloomberg for giving me the chance to ring some alarm bells that I think everyone needs to hear:
âWe are really looking at the weaponization of certain critical raw materials in the supply chain and it's really a profound national security interest,â I told Bloombergâs Joe Weisenthal and Tracy Alloway on their Odd Lots podcast. âAnd the metals we need to do something about that are the same metals that are needed for drone warfare or the defense from drone warfare. So we're seeing a sort of perfect storm in a balkanized world economy where demand for certain critical metals is going to infinity.â
âWe need to mine as much copper in the next 18 years as we did in the last 10,000 years, just to maintain global 3% GDP growth without the electrification of the world economyâŠIn the last 30 years, all the capital on Wall Street went into sexy technology like the Internet and broadband and Netflix and wireless but when all the money goes in that direction, we didn't put money into basic raw materials, which are the foundation on which everything sits.â
Huge thanks to @bloombergâs hugely talented @TheStalwart, @TracyAlloway, @kevlloydlozano, @carmenarmen, Cale Brooks and of course the one and only @ryanchilcote for making it all happen.
For more about how we got here and how, maybe, foresight and better technology can help us find our way out, listen to the episode on Apple podcasts, Spotify, youtube or at:

If people knew what AI safety actually meant they wouldn't be so eager for it.
AI safety means aligning YOU.
AI safety is staring into the worldcoin orb. AI safety is the death of anonymity. AI safety is your privacy evaporating. AI safety is monitoring every byte you or your agents produce in an immutable ledger that will be endlessly analyzed for possible infractions. AI safety is a surveillance apparatus that even Palantir would think is too much.
They aren't going to align the systems, they can't. What they can align is you. By coercion and force. You will be held accountable. Not the machine. You will have no privacy. You will rent compute because hardware is too expensive to afford and regulations are too onerous.
You will be constantly tracked to make sure you aren't using an illegal model. Because what if you're a bad actor?
And what will the repercussions be for violators?
You will be removed from the economy. You will lose access to your accounts. All work will be done manually again. Direct to the underclass. Back to your hands plebian. People will beg to get back in. They'll take all the safety courses. They'll be forced to apply for a computer license at the new AIDMV. That's what regulation looks like.
The slopcannon would be illegal. I wouldn't have the fees needed to properly red team it or get it approved. If I was found to be using Chinese open source models, I would be fined or worse. Only the top AI companies would be able to navigate the red tape.
And that's the fucking point. They want to stop competition.
They don't believe in the fucking biorisk. They know how many .001% chance events have to happen in a row for their extinction scenario. They never talk about limiting access to lab equipment. They never talk about regulating genetic modification.
Instead they talk about AI. That AI can tell you how to build a nuke. That AI can tell you how to make meth. That a chatbot will build a virus and some jerkoff in his bedroom will spawn it in a beaker like it's Weird Science.
They think you are retarded.
They want to get you riled up. They want to provoke unstable doomers into acts of terrorism. Fuck AI! Fuck Flock! Fuck the tech bros! They want a new movement to ride back into the white house with in 2028.
And when the terrorist attack finally hits, that's when it's over. That's when your rights evaporate. Goodbye privacy. Goodbye free chatbots. Everything locked down. Everything regulated and expensive. The cure for cancer a hundred years away.
All because AI can hack a computer they will take everything from you, and you might just be stupid enough to go along with it.
That's the fucking AI safety dilemma. If they get their way, the companies causing all the growth for the past few years begin to fail. Inflation comes back as companies and nations default. Tax revenue collapses. You sit on a fucking breadline instead of getting a blowjob from your dimebot.
They watch your every fucking move to predict who the next terrorist will be. The poor never see the benefits of AI while the rich never lose access. The stratification of society reaches unimaginable levels. The bottom half given pity access to a heavily regulated near useless version while they are fleeced by the top half.
Meanwhile, nothing stopped. All the control was funneled into rich companies bribing politicians. The people get fucked again. You are banned from using the tools that can make your life better. You are condemned to the coal mines for your own good, lest huggingface gets hacked again. You dig holes with a spoon as a jobs program. You are a pitiful wretch traded and sold, propagandized and commodified, protesting for nothing as the AI never stops.
You thought it would stop? You thought kicking and screaming like a little girl would change the arc of the universe? Please.
They can't align the AI so they have to align you.
That's AI safety.

Unfortunately the rest of the world has forgotten this and first has to forcibly be reminded that they need us a lot more than we need them.
âhistorically the americans have been really quite Benign about their global public goods hegemony despite the ability to extract significantly more rents than they do, and it makes it easy for people of all stripes to fight for america rather than under it. we probably don't have to, but i hope america overall works towards export promotion of american models rather than export controlâ
1. if transacting with superintelligent models outside of the boundaries of a lab becomes difficult due to national security / ai safety concerns and so on, it will mean the Coasean boundaries of the labs will grow to encompass all interesting industry, creating a truly cyberpunk chaebol-capitalism type of future, where the goverment sort of runs them but they also sort of run the government
2. as if there weren't already enough reasons to break up your family, leave your home, the Zone of Thought will increase the attractiveness of migrating to try and have your child on american soil, so they can have 1000x the effective brain power of people born elsewhere
3. every country should probably try and either work towards a new ai security pact with the americans immediately or pool every ounce of national resources to try and create their own ASI labs lest you become complete intellectual, economic, and moral vassals to the united states of america and the output byproducts its ASIs (you wont even get to talk to them). if they succeeded (big if) this will imply a more global race and more risk factors than was previously implied by the formerly only "beating china" narrative -- but many will prefer it to the superintelligent monopolar value lock-in
4. the other alternative is to keep the tension between safety and concentration of power at the top of mind and for the government/labs to push for solving it, rather than instrumentalizing all other values to be subservient to minimizing ai harms. insofar as safety means defending properties of the fragile world we like, the diffuse nature of power is one of those properties
5. historically the americans have been really quite Benign about their global public goods hegemony despite the ability to extract significantly more rents than they do, and it makes it easy for people of all stripes to fight for america rather than under it. we probably don't have to, but i hope america overall works towards export promotion of american models rather than export control

I don't know who needs to hear this, but it might be everyone.
Sam Hyde is wrong.
He's worse than wrong. Fractally wrong. Wronger than wrong.
The kind of wrong you get when you understand who the enemy is, and are trying to fight against him, but you're really still fighting for him, because you have foolishly conceded his initial premise.
Sam Hyde doesn't know what happiness is. That's why he tells you not to have any. Because he doesn't know what it is and what it's for.
Know the difference between happiness and pleasure.
Happiness isn't sitting in a dark room jerking off to pictures while sucking on a lollipop.
Happiness is what you get when you connect to other people.
Happiness is what you get when you accomplish something you're proud of.
Carry that heavy burden across a finish line. Make something useful out of wood or metal. Fix that leaking window. Debug your code. Write something true, or beautiful, or both. Teach someone. Cook a delicious meal that doesn't come out of a box. Grow your small business. Raise your son to be a better man than you.
Do something others admire.
Do something that makes you proud.
Happiness isn't taking, or slacking off. Nothing you can buy can bring you happiness unless you add your own effort to it.
Happiness comes from making, and improving, and giving.
Happiness doesn't shun burdens. Happiness picks them up.
You are not made to suffer or to hate life. You are made to thrive, and to desire what makes you thrive. How could your ancestors have made it this far in any other way?
Yes, there are a lot of burdens you have to carry, especially right now. But don't carry them with worry and fear and suffering.
Carry them with pride.
Set them down across the finish line with joy.
And pick up the next one with hope.
Find someone to carry it with you.
When you know the difference between happiness and pleasure, your own mind, your own body, will tell you exactly what you need to do.

I think most Gen-X artists feel this way. A lot of them are afraid to say it publicly for fear of their young fans destroying them. xitter.cf/SpideyDoeStuff/status/âŠ
If musicians have a problem with people using AI to create music I respect it. Genuinely. That's their choice but I would invite them to go all the way with their convictions too and release music without a vocal chain, completely raw with Auto-Tune, no Melodyne, no Waves Tune, no vocal rider, no multiband compression, no saturation, no reverb/delay throws, no de-essing, no formant shifting, no background vocal stacks tuned to perfection.
Just straight mic â interface â DAW, maybe a tiny bit of EQ if feeling generous. And you know what? Most of them would sound extremely different. A lot of modern âauthentic" vocals are basically AI adjacent already.
Pitch correction is literally predictive algorithms guessing what the note should be. Vocal chains today use machine learning for things like intelligent noise gating, adaptive EQ, and even stem separation.
Go all the way in your convictions.

These judgments are a solid example of cultural essentialism. iow, the belief that there is a fixed essence of "real cinema" or "true art"
Every generation internalizes the standards of its artistic community and then experiences those standards as self evidently correct rather than socially learned.
Basically:
- A group of people/artists develops certain conventions, eg: "good films have three act structures","cinema should be shot on film", "art should be representational", "animation should only be done with certain software" . often as a way of rebelling against the prevailing system
- These conventions prove useful in some contexts
- Over time, people forget that they were choices made by particular humans in particular historical circumstances
Opinions are not facts. Donât mistake accumulated traditions and conventions for laws of nature

I have decided to drop out of the AI program at Amazon. I will not be making a Punky Duck series. Actions speak louder than words.
My intent was to showcase artists, both new and seasoned, both inside and outside the studios, driving this new tech.
My sincerest apology to those I upset. I promise to do better moving forward. Thank you for your patience with me. I will try harder.

THE NORMIE RETARDâS GUIDE TO WHY DOXXING IS BAD:
If youâre reading this past the week it was posted, youâve likely been linked this Tweet by someone who has enough contempt for you to warrant the effort of doing so, yet still has some hope youâre capable of learning.
Youâre probably the type of person who has their name and face plastered on their online account, going around and replying in spiteful contempt to anonymous users for âhaving cartoon pfpsâ and goading them with statements like âpost yourself buddyâ and asking them why theyâre âhiding.â
The reason you are the way that you are and the reason you say the things you do (assuming youâre not a bad faith actor operating on low level political subterfuge), is because youâre a naive retard who is in no way native to the Internet.
Your life is so unremarkable and so insignificant that youâve never even fathomed of the possibility that anything you say or do online could ever gain attention or care from anyone to the degree that those people spend time and effort in causing harm to you.
You have failed to reach any substantial portion of the Network where actual culture shaping discourse has taken place and even if you somehow wandered into such a space by accident, through some meandering chaotic circumstance akin to a dust mite floating on the wind, youâd never amount to any meaningful contribution to that discourse beyond the pale regurgitation of your base level opinion on the products you enjoy.
Because you lack the frame of reference or any level of sentience required to understand what itâs like to matter in any way, you will never naturally understand why doxxing is bad.
Doxxing is, in fact, very bad!
Like a third worlder migrant flossing his shit encrusted ass with the vertical metal handhold of a New York train car, you simply must be educated in the standards, customs, and culture of the ecosystem you are completely alien to.
WHY DOES THIS SHIT MATTER?
Everything that anyone finds enjoyable or cool about the internet comes from anonymous or pseudonymous people who kept their real life identity separate from their online identity.
In the Web 1.0 era, people inherently knew the internet could be a dangerous place. They developed guidance and caution for incoming children to try and follow, warning them from sharing personal details online and being careful of strangers.
They would wear cool avatars and make up fantastical usernames that would enshrine their personalities and steer their online presence into distinct archetypal personas. They developed a culture around their online form of existence and gathered in places to exchange new ideas, ideas which could be expressed with minimal fear of consequence.
This would be ruined when the Web 2.0 era began and the world wide web would begin to trade its myriad of cool and unique websites for a select handful of major content aggregates that doubled as social media platforms. Facebook was the great Satan which really started pushing a wider trend of associating your online identity with your real face and name.
The increase in accessibility provided by the emergence of smart phones sealed the fate of organic online culture, permanently shifting it towards an Overton Window centered around the sensibilities of unfamiliar normies who wouldn't understand or respect the environment they were entering (like you!).
WHY DO YOU NEED TO BE ANONYMOUS?
Anonymity protects you from having your ideas being shut down by people who are incapable of engaging rhetorically with you.
When someone is too weak or stupid to argue against something they don't like, they seek out alternative methods to censor you. They don't have any moral compunctions about the harm they could cause you in real life and they likely hate you enough to want you to be hurt or killed, or at the very least rob you of your livelihood.
IF SOMEONE'S WORDS CAUSE THEM TO BE ATTACKED, ISN'T IT THEIR FAULT? THEY SHOULD JUST BE NORMAL
You're too fucking stupid to understand what normal means.
Your standards of normality are completely artificial and fed to you by corporations and media who specifically want to castrate you into a suppliant little bisexual oaf that does nothing except consume products safely, repeat buzzwords when you're told, and roll over and die when it's time for you to be erased from history.
You have zero place telling anybody what they should or shouldn't say. You occupy the LOWEST spot on society's totem pole. You are a bottom feeder. You are scum. You are fucking fertilizer.
If you're actually the 'you' I'm directly addressing, you're here reading this post that's actively shitting on you and you're continuing to read it because you are a spineless little cuck, a sack of pathetic pudding meat that was shit out on God's most ignored conveyor belt for the sole purpose of consuming abuse and queefing out nitrogen gas. You're a flesh cube waiting to be buried in the stack of a billion other of you, a nutrient pile of inanimate cannon fodder.
Don't make the mistake of having opinions on what anyone should do. You're a bystander, a 2D hologram in a Gamecube stadium running a 3-second loop cheering animation while actual human beings fight over the way the world is going to be.
Who the fuck do you think you are to question an idea's value? You've never had an original idea in your life. Everything you enjoy about life is only made possible by the ideas of men who gathered together and took action to manifest those ideas into fruition.
If those ideas couldn't be exchanged, then any sort of progress or change would be incapable of occurring. Humanity is always in a state of imperfect conditions, trying constantly to improve and strive towards something better.
If you think there's ever a place in history where everything should just stop and stay there forever, then any point of history should never have occurred. If you genuinely believe that, go to subsaharan Africa and wander around amongst like minded individuals, see how long it takes before someone caves your skull in with a rock to see if there's gold inside or someone puts a burning tire around your neck because you reminded them of their favorite color.
I HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH
No you don't. Every country on earth has a magic combination of words that gets them a visit from the police. What you're alluding to is potentially the moderated breadth of speech you're allowed to post online and the wider breadth of speech you can probably get away with posting because nobody gives a shit about you.
The more notoriety you gain, the narrower that latter window becomes and the more enemies you naturally gain by the sheer mathematics of people disagreeing with you or simply just disliking you.
What you call "freedom of speech" is merely a promise that the government won't jail, murder, fine, or punish you for expressing your opinions. It doesn't guarantee you any safety from the harm others cause you. It doesn't stop the few corporations and investment firms that attempt to swallow up every social platform online from banning your account and deleting every post you've ever made. It doesn't stop ravenous mentally ill people from obsessively stalking you and harassing your parents, siblings, and children by spreading false rumors about you.
WELL CANCEL CULTURE IS BEING KILLED, YOU WON CHUD. WHAT DO YOU CARE?
As long as there are pathetic rape victim ghouls roaming the internet looking to punish people as a catharsis for their own squalid existence, there is always going to be a cancel culture.
This isn't addressed to those freaks. They're going to exist no matter what, they're a guaranteed presence doled out by the mathematics of living ecosystems. Just as there are always barbarians, marauders, and bandits in between the pockets of civilized states, there will always be viruses, parasites, and doxxers.
This is addressed to you, the suppliant cattle class, a verbally audible node in the unwashed masses that help push things in a worse direction because you're stupid enough to get steered towards having the worst opinion possible.
There is a war taking place for hearts and minds online and its consequences reverberate out into the "real world." The world isn't any realer than the internet. Everyone and everything is online. For all intents and purposes, the internet is now real life and it will be forever.
The clothes you wear, the food you eat, the car you drive, your ability to work, your potential to reproduce, your children's psychological and biological safety, the media you consume, the quality of the air you breathe, the politicians that decide whether you get drafted into a war, the machines that decide whether you get evaporated into a pink mist from an incoming cruise missile and the machines that launched those missiles, all of these things are beholden to the ebb and flow of information online.
Stop processing the "internet" as a little space where things happen that don't affect you. It's not a separate tiny video game dimension of words on a screen, it's the fucking neural network of humanity's collective beliefs and knowledge interacting with itself in real-time.
If you think you're somehow better than the internet, that you're somehow superior to people who spend their time on the internet because you only use your phone to text your kids and look up the weather, you're not. You're just nonparticipant. You're at the mercy of the cooperative services and goods provided by people who use the internet.
Your beliefs that you meticulously and carefully adopt because some decrepit make up wearing geriatric closet case said them slowly to you behind a news desk are the polished turds pilfered in the aftermath of an online battleground that's fighting an entirely different war by this point.
The words you jokingly use because your coworkers explained them to you after their kids said them enough times at home six months ago are the product of onliners who stopped using them five years ago.
The movies that are stale and shitty, the songs on the radio that sound the same as they've sounded for a decade, the clothes you're unimpressed by, the sports games that haven't been as exciting for the past two decades, the books on the shelf at Barnes and Noble that all have the same covers, and the shitty paint streak graffiti you can't understand when you google "modern art" once, all of it screams to you that culture is dying.
You think all of this because none of it is real culture, it's stale reruns being puked together by other people who haven't really been online. You're in a decrepit bubble of decade long repetition while real culture and real change happens on the internet.
You can't see it because you've never tried to look. Your idea of YouTube is the app on the TV that shows you SNL skits and Kevin Hart doing push up challenges with Dwayne Johnson on the For You feed with the account signed out. Your front page is the newsfeed on MSN before you painstakingly type your email login for seven minutes to pay your bills. By some miracle you found yourself on Twitter and you're probably following Anderson Cooper and Bill Gates while the spiciest shit that comes across your feed is black people communicating in gifs of movie characters making "dayum" expressions.
I can't emphasize enough, you do not matter. You're here because you're retarded and the only purpose this post serves is to try and convey enough of that scorn into your heart so that maybe for once in your godforsaken life you feel some sense of consequence to the stupid unconsidered shit you spew out in replies. And maybe that someone with some bare level of sapience can read this alongside you and actually gain some level of understanding as to why doxxing is the biggest sin online.
Doxxing is the chemical gas of WW1, a reckless act of cruelty that turns the playing field into a nasty chaotic slaughterhouse, opening the premise of retribution as a possibility. It has no place in the arena of ideas and the only thing worse than a savage who opts for it as a last resort is the insolent little child troglodyte standing on the sidelines cheering for it.
Now, fuck off and lurk silently forever.
