They did listen and decided it was a terrible idea.

The "do no harm budget." UK has gov spending near 45% of GDP, debt near 100%. Tax revenue at levels never sustained in the UK before. Crazy fiscal drag. Concerning high income emigration. That's harm enough. Fiddling with cash ISAs and marmalade prices doesn't cut it.

Conclusions of todays Budget seem to already be out. :-). This message reminds me of programming 25 years ago and the not-useful error messages the Microsoft compiler used to spit out, akin to "Problem with needle in haystack."

This post goes some way to explaining the dire financial straits the UK is in... "Britain has almost run out of taxpayers, or at the very least, it’s slowly running out of people who pay enough taxes to plausibly finance the state." "...in 1998, about 43 per cent of British earners paid sufficient tax to cover the Government’s average per-capita spending. During Covid, that figure fell to an absolute low of circa 20 per cent, then by 2025 recovered modestly to 26.6 per cent." No wonder if fewer than 27% of people are net contributors to the state It's stats like this that make me want to leave. Big new project in the US in the next few months might be just the springboard I need @griffitha @LiamHalligan open.substack.com/pub/ieains…

How does the minimum wage going up mean that a B2B model will get more customers? Their costs have gone up too.

The incentives for small business founders have been removed and replaced with hurdles. The UK is anti-business.

Heartbreaking on two levels: 1. Small business owners dejected and may give up 2. Entrepreneurs won't bother starting So many chains weighing down those who actually want to take risk and try and build something. Success and ambition is being destroyed.
Maybe its just me, but running a small business has never - certainly not in my lifetime - been as difficult as it is right now and I'm struggling to find reasons to carry it on. Its certainly not for the work life balance, or for the money. Its not for an easy life, or to relieve avoid stress. So what is it for? To keep other people employed? To keep paying ever more tax? Its been 25 years, and I think I'm done.

The people opining that a business isn’t viable if it cannot afford min wage have never run a business. It doesn’t matter what they say.

Prices go up with inflation, and business costs go up. Which business do you run? How many people do you employ?

Good comparative analysis. Another way of looking at it is to consider what the minimum wage should be as a ratio of medium wages, and whether it’s stayed online or over reached. I’ve not crunched the numbers, but anecdotally business owners are saying minimum wage wage has gone up too quickly, and it is more sensible to hire someone with a few years experience than to take on a newbie and spend time and money getting them up to speed and delivering value.

The Hillsborough Law does not apply to the lawmakers themselves. (MPs, Peers, MSs etc are giving themselves an exemption). Help me change this: execprosec.org/petition/

MPs, peers and devolved legislators acting purely as such are excluded from the duty of candour (cl 2), its offence (cl 5) and the misleading-the-public offence (cl 12). Schedule 2 para 2(4) excludes the legislatures as public authorities; para 3 does not bring members in solely by membership. Ministers are covered only in ministerial roles. Schedule 4 misconduct offences are separate. The proposed amendments answer the main objections: they protect all UK parliamentary proceedings, opinions, mistakes and ordinary debate; limit liability to five specified high-harm purposes; and allow only fines for serving legislators. Privilege does not require excluding serious public dishonesty outside proceedings. Lack of executive power does not prevent harm from deliberate lies. Elections and internal rules are weaker for peers and serious cases. The exclusion is therefore not fully justified by the Bill’s own safeguards. Applying the standards to others while carving out legislative roles creates a clear double standard.

Given the personal allowance will have been frozen for a decade at £12,570 - it's interesting to see what it would be when it's treated with the largesse of the minimum wage.

Last week I did an interview for ITV, promoting my new live show. In the interview I say that Rupert Lowe has his legal bills paid for by Elon Musk. Rupert Lowe has contacted me to point out that that isn’t the case. Happy to set the record straight and apologise for the error.

Small businesses will continue to hunker down, not hire, and aim to weather the socialist storm.

The price of a 21 year old with no experience goes even closer to one with some experience. Who do you think firms will favour? How on earth this helps NEETs is anyone’s guess.
🚨 NEW: John Healey will increase the minimum wage for over 21s from £12.71 to around £13.20
