Welcomed Ms. Elena Piriondi, Chief of the Executive Board Branch, and Mr. Robert Stevens for a briefing and exchange on the development of the new @UNFPA Country Programme for #Eritrea. Discussions focused on the programme's substantive elements, strategic orientation, development process and alignment with Eritrea's national development priorities.
The briefing provided an opportunity to review the proposed areas of cooperation, expected results and the framework for UNFPA's continued engagement in #Eritrea. Emphasis was placed on ensuring national ownership, meaningful consultation with relevant national institutions and coherence between the programme's objectives and Eritrea's development priorities.
The exchange also took place against the backdrop of wider UN reform discussions, including system-wide concerns surrounding the proposed mergers of UN entities, institutional restructuring and the broader implications of the reform process for the UN development system.
Issues of particular relevance include the potential implications for institutional mandates, accountability, governance arrangements, resource allocation, country-level presence and the delivery of development assistance.
The importance of ensuring that reform does not undermine specialized mandates, diminish Member State oversight or compromise the ability of UN entities to respond to the distinct priorities and circumstances of programme countries was highlighted.
The UNFPA representatives outlined the next steps in the programme development and approval process, confirming that the new Country Programme for #Eritrea will be presented to the @UNFPA Executive Board in 2027.

Welcomed Mr. Guang Cong, Special Envoy of the @UN Secretary-General for the #HornOfAfrica, to the Permanent Mission of #Eritrea for an exchange of views on developments in the region.
Discussed situation in #Sudan, #SouthSudan, and #Somalia, highlighting how external interventions are aggravating conflicts, deepening divisions, and undermining prospects for peace. Emphasized respect for national sovereignty, nationally owned political processes, and constructive international engagement.
On #Eritrea–#Ethiopia relations, made it abundantly clear that any prospect of engagement with #Ethiopia's leadership on any level, requires a prior, public, unequivocal, and unconditional renunciation of coercion, threats, and the use of force, alongside unambiguous recognition of Eritrea's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. These are fundamental principles. Neither the @UN nor the @African_Union should normalize threats, entertain territorial claims, or reward coercive rhetoric. Dialogue must not legitimize the PP's conduct or create false equivalence.
Also cautioned against the inadvertent instrumentalization of international representatives to advance #Ethiopia's political narratives, manufacture external endorsements, or portray diplomatic engagements as tacit approval of its conduct. The PP's ongoing photo-op diplomacy must not camouflage realities on the ground or obscure the consequences of impunity. Carefully staged diplomatic encounters and high-profile international appearances are not endorsements of government policies, conduct, or regional ambitions, nor should they shield the #Ethiopian leadership from scrutiny and accountability.
The international community must look beyond diplomatic optics and confront the deteriorating situation within #Ethiopia, where the PP government continues to employ deadly force against its own population. Civilians have been killed, livelihoods and infrastructure destroyed, and communities subjected to violence and displacement across #Afar, #Amhara, #Benishangul-Gumuz, #Somali, Tigray, and Oromia regions . Civilian protection and accountability demand urgent international attention.
Stressed that regional peace cannot be built by externalizing #Ethiopia's internal crises or pressuring Eritrea. Meaningful engagement requires trust, mutual respect, sovereign equality, and good faith, conditions that do not currently exist. The immediate priority must be to address the PP's threats and conduct that have undermined regional peace.
#Eritrea will neither be drawn into #Ethiopia's internal political and security crises nor allow itself to become a convenient distraction from the challenges confronting the Ethiopian leadership. Those challenges must be addressed within Ethiopia, not externalized onto its neighbours.

ETHIOPIA’S OVERTLY DECLARED WAR AGENDA AGAINST ERITREA
(Verbatim Statements by Ethiopian Government Senior Officials denigrating Eritrea’s Sovereignty)
The Potemkin Party is engaged, these days, in a frenzied and deceitful diplomatic campaign to re-package the unprovoked war that it has declared against Eritrea for over three years now in “self-defense garb”.
As illustrated in the link below, the regime has leveraged, throughout this period without let-up, all its political, media and military institutions to indoctrinate its population, and especially the youth, with incendiary propaganda to normalize and rationalize a war of aggression against Eritrea.
To this end:
1. Eritrea’s Statehood and hard-won independence were, and continue to be, denigrated as “a conspiratorial Project conceived by external forces”. These inflammatory and provocative positions constitute brazen violations of international law and the sovereignty and integrity of a UN member State.
2. The Eritrean sovereign port of Assab is often depicted as “stolen Ethiopian land” that must be retrieved to “correct a historical mistake”. This falsehood and revisionist narrative of history is peddled to justify its agenda of “sovereign access to the sea”.
3. Eritrea’s southern coastal land must also be annexed to provide “strategic depth” to Ethiopia’s phantom navy.
4. Even prior to its declaration of war against Eritrea through the announcement of its Leader to the House of Peoples Representatives on 13 October 2023, and as early as July-August 2022 while the war in the Tigray Administrative Region was still raging, the Potemkin Party had sought to create an alliance with the TPLF to wage war against Eritrea which it had dubbed as the “ultimate enemy” of both entities.
5. The Potemkin Party also ramped up, inconsequential as it may be, its hostile activities of sponsoring subversive groups (“RASDO”, “Green Islamic Movement”, and another obscure outfit classified as a foreign-based terrorist Group by Germany’s Prosecutor Office) for the purposes of “regime change”.
6. The intensive war campaign and relentless saber-rattling have been accompanied by massive weapons purchasing spree; mostly underwritten by external forces.

Getachew Reda’s latest remarks about H.E. President Isaias Afwerki reveal far more about his own political predicament than about the self-less Eritrean leader he seeks to criticize.
He could not walk a single day in President Isaias’s shoes. He can’t possibly comprehend the sacrifices, strategic resolve, and political endurance required to defend a nation's hard-won independence and sovereignty in a neighborhood where political servitude has become all too familiar… and independent-minded leadership an increasingly rare commodity.
Abiy Ahmed has cultivated a political culture in which generals, senior officials, and even members of his own Prosperity Party are systematically emasculated, stripped of independent judgment, political dignity, and the courage to challenge his authority. They are expected to submit, conform, and echo his dictates. ኣንጃል Getachew Reda appears to have embraced this role with little hesitation.
What kind of political leader watches his own countrymen being slaughtered by short-range ballistic missiles, guided rockets, surface-to-air missile systems, and drones; women being raped; civilians brutally assaulted; and communities subjected to the systematic pillaging of their homes, businesses, and industries…and yet finds his voice only when commenting on the President of #Eritrea.
This is more than political opportunism. It is an appalling abdication of moral and national responsibility. A leader who cannot confront the suffering of his own people, demand accountability for their destruction, or defend their dignity has forfeited any credible claim to principled leadership. The people of #Tigray, #Afar, #Amhara, #Oromo, #Somali, #Benishangul and other suffering people of #Ethiopia deserve leaders who defend their lives, dignity, and interests, not political operatives who trade independent judgment for proximity to power.

Russia and Eritrea should focus more on expanding trade and economic cooperation, Vladimir Putin said during talks with Eritrea's Isaias Afwerki in Moscow.
He highlighted prospects in energy, mining, infrastructure, agriculture and fisheries, as well as Russia's support for Eritrea's food security.
Putin also thanked Eritrea for supporting Russian initiatives at the UN and other international platforms.

Yes the government in #Ethiopia did spend billions of dollars on armaments. Yes it just slashed 8 billion dollars on new armaments from #Russia. But, PP is dropping those bombs on #Tigray, #Amhara & #Oromia. That’s excluding #Sudan. 8 years in power. Close to 1 million people vanished in Tigray & Amhara combined. Just today, PP drones just killed close to 23 innocent civilians in Tigray. There is nothing positive with PP, except war, destruction, instability etc

AS THE HORN OF AFRICA FACES A CROSSROADS, ERITREA RESISTS THE CURRENT
By Sirak Kifle
…The Horn of Africa is undoubtedly at an existential turning point. If current trends among Eritrea’s neighbours persist, the worst-case scenario is no longer unthinkable. The continued fragmentation of Ethiopia – the region’s most populous state – could lead to systemic disintegration.
…Yet, in the middle of this regional storm, Eritrea’s future remains bright.

BRINKMANSHIP IN THE HORN OF AFRICA: A DANGEROUS GAMBLE WITH REGIONAL CONSEQUENCES
By Tedros Goitom
… In recent years, Ethiopia’s leadership under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has increasingly relied on confrontational rhetoric, military campaigns, and coercive approaches to address problems that are fundamentally political, structural, and historical in nature. The consequences have been devastating.
… The greatest irony of the present moment is that policies ostensibly pursued in the name of strengthening the Ethiopian state may be accelerating its fragmentation.

#Eritrea is at peace. It seeks no war, no confrontation & no destabilization in our region. Our people in East #Africa are saying “enough is enough”. And yet, war entrepreneurs like @KjetilTronvoll are fabricating complete false information in order to escalate the already tense situation in our region. Doing dirt of @AbiyAhmedAli’s wicked agenda of violating sovereign nations at the expense of millions of people is a crime at the highest level.
All media outlets shall refrain from spreading false information & I encourage to dissociate from people like Kjetil.

Ethiopia is leaning on those flying in weapons and those carving out a foothold on the Red Sea. Relying on outsiders has always been its downfall. When it fails again, those predatory patrons will leave, but the region will once more pay for Ethiopia's betrayal of peace with its neighbors. #EthiopianAgressionInTheHorn #Ethiopia
PP and its digital army have a new talking point: that Israel is on their side. That claim isn't new—but what's Israel's actual endgame? Historically, Israel used the Haile Selassie, Mengistu, and EPRDF governments—but never saved any of them from internal collapses. Israel also worked against Eritrea's independence historically, yet Eritrea is not only independent now but an emerging Red Sea state. As Eritreans, our focus remains on internal cohesion and regional popular support ; Everyone else will come eventually.

@AbiyAhmedAli and his handlers, enablers and supporters should study #Eritrea’s history before gambling #Ethiopian lives on another war. #Eritrean sovereignty will not buckle under empty bravado, and a foreign-supplied arsenal is no guarantee of reaching #Assab or #Asmara
Before boasting of conquest, watch and read Bacha @ButaDubi account: “ተጨፈጨፍን”—“We were slaughtered.” Were his often quoted words. Let that admission answer the salesmen of easy victory.
The patrons supplying Prosperity Party with weapons will not fill the graves or answer to the bereaved families. Poor Ethiopian soldiers and their families will bear the cost of ambitions dressed up as national destiny or hallucinatory ambition. How many more lives must be sacrificed before this leadership learns that another country’s coastline is no cure for its failures?
