#StephenHawking #theIndependent # 2007 .. Hawking warns: We must recognise the catastrophic dangers of climate change. Climate change stands alongside the use of nuclear weapons as one of the greatest threats posed to the future of the world, the Cambridge cosmologist Stephen Hawking has said. Professor Hawking said that we stand on the precipice of a second nuclear age and a period of exceptional climate change, both of which could destroy the planet as we know it.. #ClimateChange #NuclearWeapons .. independent.co.uk/climate-ch…

What Super Typhoon Champi is doing right now is almost unheard of.
We have seen many storms in the West Pacific achieve this kind of extreme intensity before, but few have done so with an eye and eyewall as physically massive as Champi’s.
At 185 MPH (298 kph), with gusts likely over 215 MPH (345 kph) and a near-buoy confirmed eye pressure of 895 MBAR, this is one of the most ridiculous cyclonic core structures we have ever seen in the satellite era.

“We must pull out all the stops to minimize peak warming and return to 1.5°C by the end of the century.”
UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen calls for urgent action to cut emissions, building on climate policies that have already proven successful.

.@UNOCHA & @WMO issue an appeal for immediate assistance to help communities already being impacted by the strongest #ElNiño on record.
The next two weeks are the critical window to act before that damage is done, @UNReliefChief said.

The UN says it is now impossible for the world to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, with emissions on track to cause 2.8°C of warming by the end of the century.

This might be the pinnacle moment of the strongest El Niño in history.
Pacific Super Typhoon Champi is unbelievable by every metric. A buoy just measured a ~909 MBAR pressure at the edge of her 40+ mile-wide eye, which has now reached a blistering dryness of -10.94 C. Her eyewall is a 180+ MPH (290+ kph) buzzsaw of cyclonic violence, and her CDO is a perfect Saturnian ring of icy, -110 F (-80 C) convective thunderstorms.
And she is still. Getting. Stronger.

The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone.
But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.
Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century.

Every fraction of a degree of global warming matters.
Yet greenhouse gas emissions remain at record levels.
The new @UNEP #EmissionsGap Report shows what it will take to change course & pull back from the brink of a climate catastrophe.

📢 Investing in early warning systems is a smart way to fund resilience.
24 hours of warning before a hazard strikes can cut damages by 30% – saving lives, protecting livelihoods, and reducing economic losses.

"The “statistial significance” of this model is overwhelming, i.e. we can resoundingly reject the hypothesis that global average SST has warmed at the same rate for the last several decades.
It’s a lot faster now (about 0.3°C/dec) than it was before 2012 (less than 0.1°C/dec)."

Subsurface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific have soared 12°C (21.6°F) above average, the highest of this El Niño, with actual temperatures reaching 33.4°C (92.1°F).
The y-axis maximum was raised again to accommodate this extreme warmth.
