I’ve waited ten years for someone to say this about Donald Trump.

From where I sit, it appears the divide in the environmental community on permitting reform is between those who make money from expansion of renewable energy and reduction in CO2 (who support it) and those who make money from filing lawsuits (who oppose it).

The prelim analysis I obtained found passing BAAJA would lead to 167 gigawatts of more solar being deployed, 51% less natural gas capacity being added from 2028-2035, and power sector carbon emissions falling 20% during that period. Read it here punchbowl.news/baaja-impact-…

It would be helpful to disambiguate these two claims, both true imo: 1. BAAJA treats new data much centers worse than other grid users, making them pay the full cost of the upgrades they trigger *and* a full share of the existing grid (and states can the elect to charge them even more on top). This redounds to the benefit of all other grid users. 2. BAAJA makes it easier to build about anything that needs a federal permit and/or new power, and data centers benefit from that the same way factories, housing, transit projects etc do.
well this tweet got a lotta attention. less so did the rest of the thread and i think my point didn't fully come across, so i deleted and am just going to write out my thoughts in full :) stay tuned

The Purpose of a System is What it Does (POSIWYD) in higher education administration.
As I exited my video call with @DMSabatini, whom I interviewed for @PirateWires via @IWF, all I could think was: here is a scientist who has made some of the biggest breakthroughs of our age—a man who is exceptional, definitionally abnormal in the best sense of the word; here he is, begging for “normal.” The people who put him in such a position—including Kristin Knouse, his ex who was found by a jury to have defamed him by falsely calling him a “rapist”—remain employed by the Whitehead Institute. Full piece in the replies.

Podesta's reading of BAAJA is incorrect. BAAJA’s project certainty title, Title IV, would not stop courts from reversing permits issued illegally under the substantive laws that authorize the permitted conduct. Nor does BAAJA prevent courts from setting aside permits that violate substantive environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, etc. (Or any other provision of law! Labor law, the Constitution, etc etc etc). And BAAJA Section 1401(b)(1)(A) expressly allows an agency to revoke a permit when "required to take such action by order of a court of competent jurisdiction." BAAJA would limit remedies under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Under BAAJA, if an agency’s environmental or historic preservation review was inadequate, a court could order it fixed but could not "set aside" the underlying permit while the agency made the fix. But as important as NEPA and NHPA may be to some, they simply are not the entirety of federal law, nor the only basis to challenge federal action.
SCOOP: Former Biden senior climate advisor John Podesta said senators should renegotiate the bipartisan permitting deal & he believes the bill’s permit certainty language hands Trump a “loaded Howitzer” to go after public lands. For @heatmap_news heatmap.news/politics/john-p…

“I’ve spent years and a good deal of my own money fighting for climate action, and I’m not in the habit of praising anything Republicans have endorsed. So I’ll say it plainly to my fellow progressives: this is a bill we should support, and I’m asking you to join me.”
A bipartisan permitting bill is the best chance we've had to build clean energy at scale. Progressives shouldn't pass it up. View article

Who are you going to believe, substantial analyses showing BAJAA climate benefits, or full-on doomer speculation that we're "locking in the current methane-heavy energy mix forever" based on literally nothing (unless I missed a provision mandating gas use until end of time?).
Replying to @FrontierTony
Totally. The most generous read is that the bill makes it harder for a future hostile administration to block renewables approved by a future friendly administration while speeding transmission — but at the cost of locking in the current methane-heavy energy mix forever.

This election matters in a sneaky way.
The average Californian has no idea how important it is on multiple levels whether Ben Allen or Jane Kim is elected state Insurance Commissioner.

Use your land as you wish so as not to harm others. We forgot this in America. We must bring it back.
Building housing during a housing crisis is the exact opposite of harm

We need a practical hand at the wheel like @BenAllenCA to manage the home insurance industry amid climate change in California rather than an ideologue who might bankrupt the state with half-baked experiments. As you can see below, insurers keep leaving the state as wildfires have wiped out like 2X of the premiums they've collected in 3 of the last 10 years. insurance.ca.gov/01-consumer…
NEW POLL We sometimes release polls for public interest. Our latest poll is for the CA Insurance Commissioner race. @BenAllenCA now leads. There are still a lot of undecided voters.

I refuse to pass laws until i get assurances nobody will try to break them might be the most self-defeating position I have ever seen Democrats take. Do your job so judges can do theirs.
Scoop in @PunchbowlNews AM: 4 Senate Democrats led by @SenDuckworth are pushing back on the bipartisan permitting reform bill, arguing it will further enable Trump to favor fossil fuel projects and won’t stop its attacks on clean energy. Merkley, Markey, Wyden join new letter

The whole “we don’t trust Trump so we can’t do permitting” thing strikes me as backward. The admin is already doing what you’re worried about without this bill. What it changes is that it gets harder to kill clean energy projects. Not trusting them is the case for passing it!

This is why Aisha Wahab was named as the Senate Housing Chair. It's why LA has permitted so few new homes after the Palisades fire. It's why the state is eye-wateringly expensive. And it's why young and working class people are fleeing. 2/2 therebuild.pub/p/californias…

"people with different political views will magically come to my side on policy if i just phrase it with the right magic words" is a lie people tell themselves because they, understandably, don't want to live in a world where hard choices are necessary.

Climate guru @SEI_Erickson tells @robinsonmeyer that the "major [environmental] group" for which he consulted during Mountain Valley Pipeline battles basically lied to the public about the pipeline's climate impacts. They knew it was a nothingburger. They said it was everything.

For years, I’ve been working on a simple problem: it takes too long to build the things we need to power America with clean, affordable energy. The bipartisan Senate infrastructure package not only includes my priorities to build more renewable projects, but it also protects ratepayers from rising energy costs. It’s not perfect, especially with Trump in the White House and his finger on the scale. But he’s a two-year problem. BAAJA solves a three-decade one.
