There was an event so good we restarted time
I’ve asked this before but is there any historical event that is like the Opposite of 9/11. Like something so good that happened that it changed the world forever

The first episode of The Good Lives from the @SnowInstitute is now live. It features Borden Flanagan of American University, my first teacher (@Blahbliptyblah) The Good Lives is an intimate and confessional interview series with people who have spent their lives reading Great Books. Borden helped me to see that this project has legs. His interview was amazing to shoot. It covers his early encounter with close reading (through a Jehovah's Witness, of course), encountering nature and death in the mountains of Washington as a teenager, discovering the possibility of articulating the world through reading Genesis, working through the dilemmas of reason through ancient political philosophy, and much more. It's fascinating and a real delight. I hope you'll watch and share it. This series is for everyone, but most emphatically for young people who in our times are less and less aware of what role good reading can play in forming, or opening the possibility for, an interesting and worthwhile life. For the rest of us who already engage in the same kind of activity Borden does it is interesting and, in Borden's case, tremendously amusing to hear him speak about his own life; for a high school or college kid, it could be the difference between being aware that there is a world wider and a life richer than they could imagine out there and being stuck. As Borden puts it: “What the good life means is, by way of these books, of conversations and thoughts, you increase your contact with the phenomena of life, which are inherently problematic and filled with paradox. But that's being alive, and that's joyful, and that's better than survival.” In this connection I'll say that we've shot many interviews so far with great people and look forward to bringing them to you soon, but I'll note one theme that keeps coming back in each one. The reading of these books and leading of a life tutored by them often depends on an accident: having a teacher see something in you, a friend hand you a copy of a book which you wouldn't have picked up for yourself, witnessing for the first time an excellent human being who was shaped by reading or being horrified for the first time by seeing anew lives disconnected from learning and thinking: "I won't let this happen to me". If one of these videos can make its way to one kid for whom it can be an accident of this kind, the project will have been a success. So I ask again: please do share the interviews, send them to your kids, your friends with kids, your friends who teach, and whoever might help these lifelines reach the people who need them. We're honored by your viewership and trust you'll enjoy watching. Thank you - NA youtube.com/watch?v=-CcNqvm4…

I need to be incredibly honest with you: they didn’t have phone
how did earlier scholars master mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and religious law, while most scholars today struggle with basic academic literacy? when did scholarship become so intellectually impoverished.

Machiavelli argues that the few are motivated not by a desire for material well being but to be recognised as superiors. This is an affront to that feeling of superiority and exceptionality.
What amazes me is the attitude of so many of the centibillionaires. A 5% tax will not make any difference to the way they live. Their spending may be extravagant, but it is still much less than their (correctly measured) income. They know that, as gifted as some of them indeed are, they have benefited from extreme luck (and the help of the state, and, to speak like an economist, monopoly rents). They know that their effective tax rate is low, relative to what many others pay. They know that extreme inequality is extremely unpopular, and can lead to political unrest, backlash, or worse. They must admit that, morally, it is hard to argue for a society in which some become obscenely wealthy, while so many are poor and see their income stagnate. They typically have not indicated that they are building their wealth to eventually make the world a better place. But they are still willing to fight the tax, spending hundreds of millions in California to avoid paying the tax. Why? They simply think what is theirs is theirs, end of story. They believe in the slippery slope, and if they do not take a stand on this levy, the government will come back for more. They hate the state and the notion that their money will be misused? Or?

Today is the official release date for my new book, First Among Equals: Visions of Equality before Egalitarianism (Belknap, 2026). It explores how and why “equality” became, rather suddenly, a basis on which ordinary men and women could make political demands in early modern England. hup.harvard.edu/books/978067…

It's crazy that there's a tool out there that's become vital to they way I do my job, parent my kids, and make major life decisions; and yet we barely spend more on it than AI
TIL that global spending on alcohol is still larger than AI infrastructure spending this year ($1.7T vs $1.5T)

My book comes out February 2, 2027. You can preorder it today. It’s a love letter to autodidacticism, a defense of the intellectual life for its own sake, and an exploration of what the sort of life looks like, engaging with thinkers like Aristotle, Montaigne, and Arendt.

Interesting. It’s screens though.
Everyone blames screens for the decline of reading. Nobody blames the consolidated corporate publishing industry that made books pricier, more generic, and harder to find. jacobin.com/2026/10/books-pu…

U.S. President Donald Trump and his political allies want Canada to be weakened so it is easier to take. Stripping Canada of our sovereignty and our natural resources is difficult to do when our territory and population are unified. But a Canada without Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan would be ripe for the plucking, as would those individual jurisdictions, with each part lacking the heft, either economically or in terms of population, to withstand U.S. pressure.
