dawg im building a small lifestyle brand for scaling compute across the solar system hmu if you’re into casual shit like that
i wandered into the australian outback alone to discover myself and i came across this aboriginal elder.
i asked him "i wanna find the meaning of life. let's say it's hidden in a cryptographic seed, the ultimate seed so obscure it's hidden among 2^384 possible seeds"
what he said shocked me
“The idea that I needed to be able to back up my words with violence if it came to it, was something that had literally never occurred to me. Ever.”
- avg voters in democracies that don’t have conscription
“Women talk a lot about how scared of male violence they are, but from their behavior it's clear they never actually consider it a possibility”
When I was eighteen I was out for the night with my bf and some friends, we were barhopping in Kings Cross. I was tipsy & occasionally lippy & obnoxious towards strangers (who were asking for it!).
My bf quietly & discreetly at one point during the night said “babe, I love you, but fuck sometimes I worry that you’re writing cheques I won’t be able to cash, if it comes to and I’m on my own”. I was like “wtf are you talking about?”
He literally had to explain to me that if I was being a fuckwit starting trouble, he’d obviously have to defend me if anything went down, and if I’m being a massive smart ass and it’s just like him & me & my best girlfriend, then he’s going to be in a fight on his own. All because I was being an antagonistic smart ass to some strangers who couldn’t take a joke.
The idea that I needed to be able to back up my words with violence if it came to it, was something that had literally never occurred to me. Ever.
It was a total revelation. Suddenly i realised talk wasn’t “cheap” in this context, it was expensive. The idea that I could effectively get him beaten up, or put him in real danger, by being a precocious little shit arguing with idiots because I could, was horrifying.
From then on I was extremely reluctant to ever argue with strangers or act like a smart ass unnecessarily, because I was suddenly keenly aware that the guys we were with could potentially be expected to pay with their lives for any poorly received flippant comments we made.
It really was totally novel to me. This isn’t how women see the world, at all.

My moat is that I am retarded and have no shame. Which means I will do the retarded thing that works
yup. neoclouds will be more like banks.
get long term debt at cheap rates to buy gpus and make a premium on short term contracts.
basically the oldest business model
The neocloud business model is the oldest and most time tested model in history. You buy assets, and you rent them out. Economics will normalize once supply and demand find equilibrium, but power constraints, accelerating compute demand, and existing shortage won't allow that to happen for some time imo. Cost of capital will come down over time with more supporting data. Just seems like a novel business rn, but its not.
guy just blocked me lol.
for the record i believe in you bro, i’m just saying brokering these things in opaque markets has little to do with your technical understanding
last year i had a spreadsheet with brand-new and used turbine generators for sale in the single to three digit MW range. there's def demand but brokering a sale is not as easy as having a spreadsheet and being a guy on twitter
a hyperscaler infra exec is not gonna touch you and smaller colo build outs don't need it. the people most likely to approach you are the ones who don't know what they're doing and haven't thought through emissions and noise and permitting and all that shit. and you're left with btc miners who are flaky af.

anything you can't throw into a bag within 15 minutes of leaving to the airport is prolly not necessary anyway
unless you have a child or relatives at the destination, etc.
my cofounder was on a call with a buddy and kept saying "aight bet, say no more"
i asked him why and he said "bro i was trying to end the call"
i was like "you know you can just say you need to go, right?"
to which he said "aight bet, say no more"
this is true today, but my hunch is that this won’t be true for long.
agents are already great at using computers and making buy vs build decisions and they are getting better by the day.
all you need is computers on a network available to rent
this isn’t necessarily a race to the bottom, but it’s definitely a commodity and prices will be decided based on demand and supply.
neoclouds that don't prioritize software will only be able to compete mainly on price, and that is a race to the bottom
the elite neoclouds are buying the best software
renting out gpus is nothing special anymore. @Allbirds, a shoe company, does it now
telecom companies (like @SKtelecom), former bitcoin miners, AI labs (like @SpaceXSI signing $75B of compute this year), and even video sites (@rumblevideo)
the neoclouds that have been in the space for a while need a new advantage and that's making switching cloud providers hard for customers
to do that, you need the best software
- @nscale bought anyscale (spreads big ai jobs across many servers)
- @nebiusai bought eigen ai (makes models run faster and cheaper) and tavily (lets ai agents search the web)
- @IREN_Ltd bought mirantis (turns racks of gpus into a cloud that businesses can use)
- @CoreWeave bought weights & biases (track model training for ai teams)
- @CrusoeAI bought atero (makes models respond faster)
it's hard to build the best software in-house fast so they buy it
just compute. nothing gigabrained. just ssh to baremetal boxes at scale on demand.
no complicated "services" or "infrastructure" or "serverless". just gpus, cpus, ram, storage, decent bandwidth, perhaps a local cache of the most popular libraries, repos, hf model weights.
the models decide what they need and pay for it.
how do you have more than 4 limbs per capita
australia has fewer than russia?
sri lanka has more than canada?
jfc way to fuck with my head
sometimes you meet someone or see someone’s regular tweets and realize there really are towering intellects everywhere.
quite humbling to realize you’re a retard compared to them, but also makes you glad that such people are walking among us contributing to civilization and fixing our world.
it may be a little intimidating to talk to them because it seems impossible that you could interest them with anything you have to say, but getting a chance to peer into their mind is totally worth the risk of getting rebuffed.
